Had a ballot been allowed Nottinghamshire would have stood by whatever the outcome was win or lose. I put it to the uneducated masses not only were the Nottinghamshire miners not scabs but upholders of union (NUM) law and that the real scabs were the Marxist, Leninist, socialist infiltrators within the coal mining industry. The critical element was the NUM's failure to hold a national strike ballot. The strike was ruled illegal in September 1984, as no national ballot of NUM members had been held.
